Darrin O`Quinn
Controller
As Financial Controller at Humber Valley Paving, Darrin O`Quinn most ably oversees the financial operations of the company. Darrin`s professional credentials include a Business Diploma and a Business Degree from Memorial University of Newfoundland and Labrador. In 1995, Darrin received his CA designation and was admitted to the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Newfoundland and Labrador. In addition to completing the core requirements of the Certified Financial Planner Program, he has also successfully completed the in-depth tax program of the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants. Darrin`s responsibilities span all finance related activity in the company with particular focus on financial statements, accounting functions, costing, budgeting, and bid research and development. He brings to that work an impressive range of experience in the field. Since 1993, Darrin has held key positions with such chartered accounting firms as Earle and Squire and Grant Thornton and has been employed in senior financial positions with the Barry Group and, more recently, with the Finance Division of Coleman Management Services.
Nigel Baker
Director of Operations
Nigel Baker currently serves Humber Valley Paving as the Director of Operations. In addition to that critical role, Nigel contributes his singularly expert knowledge of this industry to the company in a management capacity. In 1994, Nigel and his partner founded Humber Valley Paving which he sold to the current group of shareholders in 2007. The company is fortunate to have retained his advice and guidance as we chart our current growth directions. Nigel`s impressive experience in the field spans twenty five years; he having started working in a family owned paving business in Gander at sixteen years old. Nigel`s superior knowledge of the industry extends to all sectors including crushing, asphalt preparation and field operations. He currently supervises the entire field operation and is our lead executive when it comes to the bidding process. He is also a leader in operational planning, in scheduling and in directing his field operations team.
Gene Coleman
Special Project Manager
Gene Coleman holds the position of Special Project Manager at Humber Valley Paving. Gene graduated from the School of Business at Queen's University in 2002 and later, in 2007, he successfully completed the Master Certificate in Project Management at York University. His determination to deliver knowledgeable and superior project management motivated his recent completion of the Operational Leadership Program from the School of Business at Queen`s University. Having worked in the construction industry since 2002, Gene has built extensive practical experience that complements his impressive professional background. Gene`s many responsibilities include liaising with public sector officials and overseeing tender preparation. He is involved in such key aspects of operations management as quality control, project scheduling and budget control. The demanding pace of our industry, the constant challenges brought on by rapid change and the uniqueness of each project are some of our industry`s characteristics that motivate Gene`s interest in this challenging and exciting field.
Scott Thomas
Asphalt Superintendent
Scott Thomas is the Asphalt Superintendent at Humber Valley Paving who brings a wealth of practical knowledge to the supervision of our asphalt operations. He has occupied a wide range of positions during his thirty years in the asphalt industry and has consistently ensured that quality asphalt is produced under his guidance. During that time, Scott has learned well the demands of the industry as they relate to Newfoundland and Labrador having been employed by paving companies that have spanned the island. Adding to his range of skill and experience, Scott has worked in many capacities during his eleven years with this company before taking on the responsibilities of Asphalt Superintendent. He currently supervises the entire asphalt operation, has a key input role in the preparation of quotes and is involved in site management and sales. With reliable consistency, Scott makes sure that all asphalt equipment is on site as it is needed so that a high quality asphalt product is delivered on time and then properly placed. His range of experiences in the asphalt industry has afforded Scott a valued opportunity for professional growth which he has much appreciated. He enjoys the challenging demands of the industry and relishes the opportunity to work with people from all sectors of the business.
Brad Thomas
Asphalt Plant Supervisor
Brad Thomas has held the key role of Asphalt Plant Supervisor at Humber Valley Paving since 2004. He has earned the respect of his colleagues and of our clients as he carries out his duties with experience, skill and dedication. Brad is a graduate of the Marine Engineering Program at the Marine Institute of Memorial University of Newfoundland and Labrador which he completed in 2001. Having worked as an Engine Room Assistant for Algoma, he brings to our company valued, previous experience. Recent training initiatives at HVP have supported the participation by Brad and his crew in industry related customer training aimed at developing operational efficiencies so as to serve our clients with consistently optimal customer service. As Asphalt Plant Supervisor, Brad oversees the operations of HVP's three asphalt plants; their efficiency in the manufacturing of quality asphalt being critical to the successful completion of all projects. Brad enjoys the rapidly changing dynamic of our industry. He is motivated by the fact that each of our projects is unique and different and that their many locations allow him to get to know our vibrant, scenic province.
Janet Coleman
Human Resources and Safety Manager
Janet Coleman is the Human Resources and Safety Manager at Humber Valley Paving. Janet's work is vital to ensuring that the team at HVP is supported both on the safety side and on the employee support side. Janet's impressive professional background has armed her with a range of skills on which she is building valuable industry expertise. After earning an Honours Bachelor of Arts degree from Queen's University, Janet went on to attain her Bachelor of Laws from Leicester University in the United Kingdom. Early career experience as a Human Resources Officer for the Coleman Group of Companies sealed her orientation toward the people dynamic of the workplace in which she has now been involved since 2005. Prior to taking on her current role in 2010, Janet was retained as a Human Resources and Corporate Compliance Consultant for HVP and for the Coleman Group. Janet's current role impacts all divisions of HVP as she strives to move forward the company's strong commitment to health and safety and to team member support. Early days at HVP saw her role as being primarily a Health and Safety role, but it has since grown to include a full range of HR functions. She is charged with leading the collaborative development and implementation of the policies and procedures that will drive the critically important HVP mandate to guide, protect, train, and provide employer support to our highly valued, diverse workforce.
Curtis Quinlan
Road Superintendent
As the Road Superintendent at Humber Valley Paving, Curtis Quinlan knows well the footprint of our entire road paving operation. Curtis received his Welding certification in 1975 from the Lewisporte Vocational School. Curtis brings impressive industry experience to the company. Prior to his coming to HVP, he worked for some twenty-five years with western Newfoundland paving operations where he gained the impressive knowledge of the industry that he brings to each of our projects. He became Road Superintendent in 2007 and has capably contributed to the company in that key role. In addition to being responsible for the many phases of road preparation, Curtis supervises the busy road crews. Having begun this work as a young man, he is proud of his expertise and he consistently applies it to do the best job he can and make his contribution to the quality work for which HVP has earned its solid reputation.
Mark Compton
Equipment Manager
Mark Compton`s role of Equipment Manager is a vital one for Humber Valley Paving. His formal education was completed in 1990 when he received a Bachelor of Theology from Toronto`s Eastern Pentecostal Bible College. During his early days in the construction industry as a seasonal employee, Mark learned the many facets of this complex, demanding industry and with that understanding grew an enthusiasm for this work. Mark has spent the last ten of his twenty years in the business as a Product Supervisor during which time he honed the skills that support his challenging work as the HVP Equipment Manager. Mark oversees all the equipment at HVP; he advises on acquisition, manages the critically important, ongoing maintenance of our equipment and finally, oversees any needed disposal procedures. Mark thoroughly enjoys the outdoor element of his work and is very motivated by its problem solving dimension as he works to consistently ensure that the necessary equipment is available as and where needed by the project teams.
